January 24, 2023 Technical Requirements for LTE-Advanced (FDD), etc. Aimed at Expanding Aerial Use of Mobile Phones as Part of Technical Requirements for New-Generation Mobile Communications Systems
Partial report from the Information and Communications Council
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (Chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Executive Advisor, NEC Corporation). The partial report concerns the technical requirements for LTE-Advanced (FDD) and other technologies aimed at expanding aerial use of mobile phones, as part of the technical requirements for new-generation mobile communications systems (inquiry number 2038, dated October 12, 2016).
1. Background
In response to the growing number of fields in which unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) are used, there is rising demand to equip drones with mobile phones for the purposes of drone control and image/data transmission. At the same time, new needs are emerging in such areas as 5G use and usage in helicopters by emergency rescue and disaster management organizations. Accordingly, the broadening of the technical requirements for aerial use of mobile phones is required.
In light of this situation, the Information and Communications Council has been studying the technical requirements for the aerial use of mobile phones.
The Council has also been undertaking deliberations aimed at systemic revisions relating to Local 5G—a fifth-generation mobile communications system that can be used by various entities according to local or personal needs—in light of new usage needs associated with further promoting the introduction and popularization of Local 5G.
MIC today received from the Council a partial report concerning the technical requirements for LTE-Advanced (FDD) and other technologies aimed at expanding aerial use of mobile phones, based on the results of these deliberations.
2. Future schedule
In consideration of the partial report, MIC will promptly put in place the relevant regulations.
