Announcement of the seminar under the theme "The Latest Trends in Use Cases for 6G in the World"

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold the 15th New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era on February 22. Along with details of the latest trends in standardization initiatives, the seminar will provide information about 6G use cases currently under consideration by North America's Next G Alliance and Europe's Hexa-X, which are leading global research and development toward Beyond 5G (6G). The speakers at the seminar will be Professor NAKAO Akihiro of the University of Tokyo, Mr. John MACIAS of the Next G Alliance, and Dr. Bahare Masood KHORSANDI of Hexa-X.

1. Purpose

Launched by MIC in December 2020, the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo) works with the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium and relevant ministries, agencies, and organizations to strategically promote intellectual property acquisition and international standardization related to Beyond 5G.

As part of its initiatives, the Center will hold the 15th New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era under the theme of "The Latest Trends in Use Cases for 6G in the World" to provide information about the latest intellectual property and standardization trends and business strategies, with the aim of promoting intellectual property and international standardization strategy.

  • Content: The seminar will feature guest speakers from two organizations leading global research and development toward 6G: Mr. John MACIAS, Applications Working Group Vice Chair at North America's Next G Alliance, and Dr. Bahare Masood KHORSANDI, Work Package 1 Lead at Europe's Hexa-X, who is also involved in Hexa-XII, which was launched in January 2023. The speakers will discuss topics including use cases for 6G currently under consideration, new business opportunities, and standardization strategy toward 6G.

Among the topics they will discuss in the context of the Next G Alliance and Hexa-X will be the following:

  • The direction of work toward 6G and the latest trends in intellectual property and standardization initiatives.
  • Use cases in the 6G era, and new business opportunities and service scenarios, etc. Dr. KHORSANDI will also touch on Hexa-XII.

In the panel discussion, based on the content of their keynote addresses, the speakers will discuss initiatives and prospects from the perspectives of changes that 6G will bring to the world, challenges for its social implementation, approaches to industry-university-government collaboration, standardization strategies toward 6G, and the relationship to intellectual property rights. The speakers will also take questions from the floor. Serving as moderator will be Professor NAKAO Akihiro of the University of Tokyo, who holds a wide range of important posts in the information and communications field, including chair of the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium's International Committee
