October 23, 2023 Status of Revenues and Expenses of Private Broadcasters in FY2022

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has recently summarized the state of the revenues and expenses of private broadcasters for fiscal 2022.

1. Overview

A summary of the revenues and expenses for fiscal 2022 is shown below. See the attachment for details.

  • Terrestrial basic broadcasters
    As for terrestrial basic broadcasters (excluding community broadcasters), their sales decreased (0.4% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (33.2% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.
    As for community broadcasters*, their sales increased (11.8% year-on-year), and operating income made improvements compared to the previous fiscal year.
    *The most recent business revenue and expenditure data are now included for businesses previously excluded due to their fiscal year end not having arrived.
  • Satellite broadcasters
    As for satellite broadcasters (satellite basic broadcasters and satellite general broadcasters), the operating revenue of their satellite broadcasting business decreased (1.4% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (28.9% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.
  • Cable television broadcasters
    For cable television broadcasters*, the operating revenue of their cable television business decreased (2.2% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (18.0% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.
    *The data excludes broadcasters that use the IP multicast method among registered general broadcasters (limited to commercial corporations) and perform independent broadcasts with wired telecommunications equipment.
