December 12, 2023 Launch of Postal Global Strategy Task Force

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) is initiating the Postal Global Strategy Task Force to discuss how to enhance collaboration among domestic and international stakeholders and strategically expand Japan’s strong postal infrastructure system overseas while leveraging global information and opportunities to promote services that benefit users in the postal sector.

1. Purpose

In recent years, in the context of the global environment that is becoming more and more complex, the governments and postal agencies of major countries have been addressing common challenges, such as the stable provision of universal services. At the same time, they need to respond to emerging challenges like digital transformation (DX), greening, sustainability, and economic security.
Additionally, postal agencies and related companies in various countries are actively and strategically using platforms like the Universal Postal Union (UPU) to explore new business developments in the postal, logistics, and financial sectors in the post-pandemic era.
Under these circumstances, MIC is launching the Postal Global Strategy Task Force to discuss ways to promote services that benefit users in the postal sector by utilizing global information and opportunities and to explore how to enhance collaboration among domestic and international stakeholders for the strategic overseas deployment of Japan’s strong postal infrastructure system.

(1) Current status, challenges, and recent trends in postal services overseas
(2) Global challenges and initiatives related to postal services
(3) Ways of collaboration among stakeholders in light of global situations and overseas trends
(4) Approaches for strategic global responses at multilateral and bilateral levels

4. Schedule

The first meeting will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023, and subsequent meetings will follow in sequence, with the final report to be compiled by the summer of 2024.
