December 22, 2023 Establishment of the National Council for Promoting the Shared Use of Relay Stations

The National Council for Promoting the Shared Use of Relay Stations will be established to study ways to improve the efficiency of the broadcasting network, including the shared use of terrestrial wave relaying stations, which will be made possible by the Act to Partially Amend the Radio Act and the Broadcasting Act (Act No. 40, 2023).

1. Purpose

The purpose is to study ways to improve the efficiency of broadcasting networks, such as the shared use of terrestrial relay stations made possible by the Act to Partially Amend the Radio Act and the Broadcasting Act (Act No. 40 of 2023), and to promote regional studies by clarifying the division of roles among related parties and sharing common issues and leading examples.

2. Main roles

(1) Examination of the establishment of relay station shared-use companies.
(2) Development of a roadmap for achieving the shared use of terrestrial television relay stations.
(3) Aggregation and sharing of information on regional challenges and leading examples.
(4) Organization and coordination of other necessary matters.

3. Members

  • The Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (General Incorporated Association)
  • Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK)
  • Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC)
  • Representatives from Regional Councils and others

4. Others

The first general meeting will be held on Monday, December 25, 2023. Regional councils in each region will be held in turn.
