December 28, 2023 New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era (18th)

As part of the activities of the Beyond 5G New Management Strategy Center, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold a seminar entitled “Issues and Trends in Standard Essential Patents and Patent Pools” in the field of information and communication standardization and intellectual property strategy on Monday, January 29, 2024.
In this seminar, Professor SUZUKI Masabumi of Waseda University, YAMAMOTO Kazushige, Representative of Avanci Tokyo Office, and KOIKE Shinichi, Attorney at Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Center, will speak.

1. Purpose

As part of the activities of the Beyond 5G New Management Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo), MIC continuously holds seminars for various companies and organizations (management and business divisions, in particular) aimed at raising awareness and disseminating information for Beyond 5G new business seminars.

MIC will hold a seminar on the theme of “Issues and Trends in Standard Essential Patents and Patent Pools,” which is related to standardization and intellectual property strategy in the field of information and communication, as specified below.

Seminar overview


In this seminar, keynote speeches and panel discussions will be held on standard essential patents and patent pools that are indispensable for the manufacture of products compliant with standard specifications.

Keynote speeches will include:
  • From SUZUKI Masabumi, Professor, Faculty of Law, School of Law, at Waseda University, on the challenges of standard essential patents and responses of standardization organizations to date
  • From YAMAMOTO Kazushige, Representative of Avanci Tokyo Office, on the overview of the patent pool operated by Avanci and the operational status of patent pools related to wireless communications
  • From KOIKE Shinichi, Attorney and Specialist Commissioner at Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Center, on trends in the essentiality judgment of standard essential patents

The panel discussion will involve a broad discussion on standard essential patents and patent pools based on the content of each keynote speech. Questions from participants will also be accepted.
