February 10, 2023 Results of ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting and Digital Senior Officials’ Meeting with Japan

On February 10, 2023, the ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting with Japan was held in Boracay, in the Philippines. Mr. YOSHIDA Hiroshi, Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination, attended the meeting as the head of Japan's delegation and proposed the ASEAN-Japan 2023 Digital Work Plan on cooperation and collaboration measures between Japan and ASEAN in the ICT field over the next year, which was endorsed by the participants. 2023 marks the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will continue to work toward further deepening cooperation between Japan and ASEAN, as well as developing it in more concrete forms.

(Both meetings 1. and 2. were attended by cabinet ministers and senior officials from the 10 members of ASEAN. From Japan, Mr. YOSHIDA attended both meetings.)

2. Outline of meeting outcomes

Mr. YOSHIDA co-chaired the ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting with Japan with a cabinet minister from host nation the Philippines, and also co-chaired the ASEAN Digital Senior Officials’ Meeting with Japan with a senior official from the host nation.
At both meetings, Mr. YOSHIDA proposed the ASEAN-Japan 2023 Digital Work Plan on cooperation and collaboration measures between Japan and ASEAN in the ICT field over the next year, which was endorsed by the participants. He also explained the importance of promoting Open RAN as an open and secure 5G network, and introduced Japanese capacity building support initiatives in the cybersecurity field.
