February 28, 2023 Results of Survey on Broadband Infrastructure Coverage Rate at End of FY2021
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) surveys the coverage rate of broadband infrastructure every fiscal year to further promote the spread and development of information and communications infrastructure in the future. Today, MIC released the survey results of the coverage rate of optical fiber for households as of the end of fiscal 2021.
1. Survey coverage rate of broadband infrastructure
MIC conducted the survey on broadband service areas with telecommunications carriers that provide broadband services to general subscribers via the facilities of carriers, including those that provide services under indefeasible-right-of-use (IRU) contracts to lease facilities developed by local governments. MIC compiled the broadband service coverage rate by dividing the estimated number of households in each area by the total number of households (rounded off to three decimal places) based on information obtained from telecommunications carriers and data from the Basic Resident Register.
Note: Estimates are based on certain assumptions according to data, such as business information, and therefore may contain errors. Actual availability may vary depending on the geographic conditions of the service area and building facilities.
