The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received today a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Executive Advisor of NEC Corporation) in response to MIC’s Inquiry No. 2038, dated October 12, 2016, on technical requirements for relay stations and high-power terminals, etc., for expanded use of 5G, etc. as part of technical requirements for new-generation mobile communications systems.

1. Background

The traffic on the fifth-generation mobile communications system (5G) is expected to increase, necessitating its nationwide development. In the national development of 5G, the characteristics of the frequencies used for 5G require efficient means to cover a wide area, including indoor areas. Therefore, since December 2021, the Information and Communications Council has been studying the introduction of relay facilities and the revision of regulations on aerial power and gain. Today, MIC received a partial report from the Council on technical requirements for relay stations and high-power terminals, for expanded use of 5G, etc., as part of technical requirements for new-generation mobile communications systems.

2. Partial report

The partial report is shown in Attachment 1 in PDF. The summarized material of the New-generation Mobile Communications System Subcommittee’s report is shown in Attachment 2 in PDF.

3. Future plans

MIC will promptly proceed with the relevant institutional developments based on this partial report.
