August 10, 2023 Aggregation and Provisional Calculation of Internet Traffic in Japan Announcement of aggregate results as of May 2023

To grasp the actual state of fixed broadband Internet traffic (communications volume) in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) conducted an aggregation of the traffic for May 2023. The results are summarized in the attached PDF. MIC made this provisional calculation under the cooperation of nine Internet Service Providers (ISPs) (*1), five Internet Exchange (IX) organizations (*2), and some researchers (*3).

Main points

As of May 2023, the total download traffic of Japan’s fixed broadband Internet service (*4) subscribers (*5) was estimated at approximately 30.5 Tbps (about 208.7 GB per contract per month (*6)). This result represents a 17.4% increase compared to the same month in the previous year.
