August 31, 2023 Publication of Amended Guidelines for Local 5G Implementation Institutional development for more flexible operation of local 5G

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has established Guidelines for Local 5G Implementation to promote the introduction of Local 5G, which has been institutionalized as a 5th-generation mobile communications system that various entities can use according to regional and individual needs.
Recently, MIC amended the Guidelines for Local 5G Implementation in line with the implementation of institutional development for more flexible operation of Local 5G.

Background and overview

Local 5G can be used flexibly by various entities, such as local companies and local governments, according to the individual needs of regions and industries. Therefore, it is anticipated to serve as a critical solution for addressing challenges and revitalizing various regions across Japan.
In January of this year, MIC received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Executive Advisor of NEC Corporation) concerning the more flexible operation of Local 5G. Accordingly, MIC has amended the applicable ministerial ordinance and related conditions based on the report. In accordance with the amendments, the Guidelines for Local 5G Implementation have been amended to reflect the amended contents.
