August 3, 2023 Publication of Status of 5G Development (at the end of FY2022)

Based on reports from mobile carriers, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled the status of 5G development as of the end of FY2022 and decided to make it public.
As of the end of FY2022, the nationwide 5G population coverage rate was 96.6%, achieving the target of 95% by the end of FY2023 in the Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation, one year ahead of schedule.

Overview

In its Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation (formulated in March 2022 and revised in April 2023), MIC has set a number of development goals, including the following ones.
• Nationwide 5G population coverage: 95% by the end of FY2023, 97% by the end of FY2025, and 99% by the end of FY2030
• 5G population coverage on a prefecture-by-prefecture basis: 90% or more in each prefecture at the end of FY2025 and 99% at the end of FY2030
Based on reports from mobile carriers (NTT Docomo, KDDI Corporation/Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company, Softbank Corporation, and Rakuten Mobile, Inc.), the status of 5G development as of the end of FY2022 has been compiled and is now available.
As of the end of FY2022, the nationwide 5G population coverage rate was 96.6%, achieving the Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation one year ahead of schedule.
