September 6, 2023 Publication of the Report entitled “The Directions for Future Consideration from the Working Group on Countermeasures Against Illegal and Harmful Information including Defamation under the Study Group on Platform Services” and the Results of Re-solicitation for Opinions

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) solicited opinions from Friday, June 2 through Friday, June 30, 2023, on the draft report entitled “The Directions of Future Consideration from the Working Group on Countermeasures Against Illegal and Harmful Information including Defamation under the Study Group on Platform Services,” prepared by the Working Group on Countermeasures Against Illegal and Harmful Information including Defamation (chaired by SHISHIDO George, professor at the Graduate School for Law and Politics, The University of Tokyo) under the Study Group on Platform Services, and subsequently conducted a re-solicitation for opinions from Wednesday, July 19 through Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
MIC now publicizes the finalized report, “The Directions of Future Consideration from the Working Group on Countermeasures Against Illegal and Harmful Information including Defamation under the Study Group on Platform Services,” along with the results of the re-solicitation for opinions.

Background

In this Working Group, discussions have been held regarding countermeasures against illegal and harmful information including defamation. The draft report outlining the directions for these future discussions was compiled during the 7th meeting on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Public opinions were initially sought from Friday, June 2 through Friday, June 30, 2023. To further reflect the diverse opinions of the public, a re-solicitation for opinions was conducted from Wednesday, July 19 through Tuesday, August 15, 2023, resulting in 55 submitted opinions.
The report, “The Directions of Future Consideration from the Working Group on Countermeasures Against Illegal and Harmful Information including Defamation under the Study Group on Platform Services,” has been finalized based on both the received public opinions and the discussions during the 9th meeting held on Monday, September 4, 2023, and is now made publicly available.
