Results of 2024 International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24)
ITU WTSA was held in New Delhi, Republic of India, from Tuesday, October 15, to Thursday, October 24, 2024.
WTSA is held every four years as a supreme decision-making meeting to decide the direction of standardization activities in the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T). During the assembly, the chairs and vice-chairs of the advisory group and study groups for the next study period (2025-2028) were appointed, and recommendations and resolutions were approved.
1. Schedule, etc.
Dates: Tuesday, October 15, to Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Venue: Republic of India (New Delhi)
Attendees: Approximately 1,500 participants from 164 member states, including representatives from information and telecommunications ministries and agencies, telecommunications carriers, and manufacturers. 41 people from Japan participated.
2. Major results
(1) Consolidating study groups (SGs) Following a Japan’s proposal regarding SG consolidation at the Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG) meeting in January 2024, SG consolidation (SG9 + SG16) was approved for the first time in 16 years, resulting in the creation of SG21.
(2) Appointing the chairs and vice-chairs of TSAG and SGs for the next study period
The table below lists the Japanese representatives who will lead standardization activities at TSAG and SGs during the next study period. TANIKAWA Kazunori (NICT) was appointed as chair, along with seven others as vice-chairs.

3. Upcoming schedule
Based on these results, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will continue its efforts to develop Japan's telecommunications systems and strengthen international competitiveness, while actively contributing to the ITU's activities to ensure the smooth progress of international standardization efforts.
