December 13, 2024 Results of the Solicitation for Opinions on the Draft Amendments to the "Basic Policy on Special Measures Concerning the Suspension of AM Station Operations" (hereinafter referred to as the "Basic Policy") and Its Revision

The MIC prepared draft amendments to the Basic Policy and solicited opinions from Friday, October 25, 2024, to Friday, November 15, 2024, and received 29 opinions.
Based on the results of the opinion solicitation, the MIC has revised and published the Basic Policy.

Background

When private sector AM radio broadcasters consider switching their basic broadcasting station (primary station) from AM broadcasting (medium wave broadcasting) to FM broadcasting (very high frequency broadcasting) (hereinafter referred to as "switching to FM"), or discontinuing basic broadcasting stations (relay stations) engaged in AM broadcasting without switching to FM as a business, it must do so in a way that minimizes the social impact, particularly on listeners. Accordingly, to enable such broadcasters to suspend AM station operations for a certain period ahead of the discontinuation, the MIC announced the Basic Policy in March 2023.
Based on the discussions at the Study Group on Broadcasting Systems in the Digital Age, the MIC prepared draft amendments to the Basic Policy. The Basic Policy include requirements and procedures for applying for special measures. The MIC solicited opinions from Friday, October 25, 2024, to Friday, November 15, 2024, and received 29 opinions.
Based on the results of the opinion solicitation, the MIC amended the Basic Policy.
