- Partial Report from the Information and Communications Council -

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council, chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, special advisor to NEC Corporation, regarding the Advancement Technical Requirements, which are part of the Mobile Technical Requirements (Consultation No. 2038, dated October 12, 2016).

1. Background

 In recent years, mobile phones have become an indispensable part of daily life. The use of IoT utilizing mobile phone systems ("cellular IoT") is expanding into new fields such as medicine, transportation, and fishing. As of the end of FY 2023, the nationwide population coverage of 5G has reached 98.1%, with further expansion expected in the future. In light of these circumstances, the Information and Communications Council studied the technical requirements for RedCap (Reduced Capability) and eRedCap (Enhanced RedCap), which are User Equipment standards for IoT of 5G. Today, the MIC received a partial report from the Council.

2. Future plans

 The MIC will promptly prepare related regulations based on the partial report.
