December 17, 2024 Technical Requirements for Use of 5 GHz Band Wireless LAN in the sky(hereinafter referred to as the "5 GHz Technical Requirements")
- Partial Report from the Information and Communications Council -

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report today from the Information and Communications Council, chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, special advisor to NEC Corporation, on the 5 GHz Technical Requirements. These technical requirements are part of "Technical Requirements for Advanced Use of 5 GHz Band Wireless LAN" (hereinafter referred to as the "Advanced Use Technical Requirements"), which are included in "Technical Requirements for Upgrading Low-power Wireless Systems" (hereinafter referred to as the "Upgrade Technical Requirements") (Consultation No. 2009 with the Information and Communications Council, dated September 30, 2002).

1. Overview

In recent years, wireless LAN technology has been increasingly used for drones and other applications, raising the demand for use of 5 GHz band frequencies in the sky. The 5 GHz band wireless LAN, capable of transmitting high-resolution images, is expected to be utilized in inspecting infrastructure, such as bridges and other structures, as well as in creating images through aerial photography.
Against this background, the ICT Subcommittee under the Information and Communications Council deliberated on the 5 GHz Technical Requirements and issued a partial report today.

2. Future plans

Based on the partial report, the MIC plans to develop the ministerial ordinances related to the Radio Act.
