February 2, 2024 Release of Third Summary of Study Group on Platform Services and Result of Solicitation for Opinions Study Group on Platform Services

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) solicited opinions on a draft of the third summary compiled by the Study Group on Platform Services (chaired by SHISHIDO George, professor, the Graduate School of Law and Politics, the University of Tokyo), from Thursday, December 14, 2023, through Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
MIC has now released the “Third Summary of the Study Group on Platform Services,” which has been finalized based on the results of the solicitation for opinions, along with the results of the solicitation.

1. Background

The Study Group discussed measures against illegal and harmful information on the Internet and the handling of user information. At its 51st meeting on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the Study Group issued a draft of the third summary, leading to the solicitation of opinions from Thursday, December 14, 2023, to Wednesday, January 17, 2024. As a result, 76 opinions were received.
Based on these opinions and the discussion at the 52nd meeting of the Study Group on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the “Third Summary of the Study Group on Platform Services” has been finalized and published.

2. How to obtain materials

The information will be posted in the Public Comment section of the e-Government (e-Gov) portal (https://www.e-gov.go.jp) and distributed at the contact point.
