March 12, 2024 “Technical Requirements for Fifth-Generation Mobile Communication Systems in the 4.9 GHz Band” of “Technical Requirements for New-Generation Mobile Communication Systems” - Partial Report from the Information and Communications Council -

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Special Advisor to NEC Corporation) on the “Technical Requirements for Fifth-Generation Mobile Communication Systems in the 4.9 GHz Band" out of “Technical Requirements for New-Generation Mobile Communication Systems” (Inquiry No. 2038 dated October 12 2016).

1. Background

 With regard to the fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G), there is a need to secure frequencies to cope with a rapid increase in traffic in future, and the “Frequency Reorganization Action Plan (2023 version)” also stipulates that the consideration should be given to the allocation of frequencies for 5G. With this in mind, the Information and Communications Council has examined the technical conditions for using the 4.9 GHz band (4.9 GHz to 5.0 GHz) for 5G and today presented part of its report.

2. Future Plans

 MIC will promptly prepare related regulations based on the partial report.
