April 23, 2024 Selection Results for the “Regional Digital Infrastructure Utilization Promotion Project (Autonomous Driving Level 4 Verification)” Funded by the FY 2023 Supplementary Budget
Seven consortiums have been selected as demonstration organizations for the Regional Digital Infrastructure Utilization Promotion Project (Autonomous Driving Level 4 Verification). They will verify the ability of communication systems to safely and efficiently support level 4 autonomous driving.
1. Overview
In the "Comprehensive Strategy for the Vision for a Digital Garden City Nation (2023 Revision)," the Japanese government set up the goal of implementing unmanned autonomous driving services in selected regions through collaborative efforts among relevant government ministries and agencies. This initiative aims to enhance regional transportation by leveraging autonomous driving technology. Specifically, the government plans to implement the services in approximately 50 locations by around FY 2025 and expand them to over 100 locations by around FY 2027.
To help achieve the government’s goal, MIC plans to verify the reliability of communication systems necessary for safe and efficient autonomous driving. Additionally, it will create a collection of models that can be referenced by regions that are considering the introduction of autonomous driving.
This time, Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (MRI), the administrator of the Regional Digital Infrastructure Utilization Promotion Project, which is funded by the FY 2023 supplementary budget, has completed the selection of demonstration organizations tasked with the aforementioned verification. We are pleased to announce the selection results.
These demonstration organizations will sequentially commence their demonstrations in the near future. An interim report is scheduled for around September with a final summary expected around February. Details of progress will be posted on the project's website as they become available.
