June 24, 2024 First Report from the Information and Communications Council Concerning “How Post Offices Should Contribute to Local Communities in the Digital Society”

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today received the first report from the Information and Communications Council (Chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Special Advisor to NEC Corporation) on Consultation No. 1235 dated October 14, 2022, concerning “How Post Offices Should Contribute to Local Communities in the Digital Society.” The overview is given below.

1. Particulars, etc.

 On Friday, October 14, 2022, MIC consulted the Information and Communications Council on “How Post Offices Should Contribute to Local Communities in the Digital Society.” The Council’s Postal Policy Subcommittee (Chaired by YONEYAMA Takao, Professor Emeritus, Hitotsubashi University) examined and deliberated the matter.
 This report is based on the result of the solicitation for opinions by the Subcommittee from Friday, May 3 through Thursday, June 6, 2024.

 Today’s first report summarizes how post offices should contribute to local communities by fully utilizing their usefulness as regional bases.

3. Future plans

 MIC will implement the necessary measures based on the first report.
