August 30, 2024 Publication of 5G Development Status (As at End of FY 2023)

 Based on reports from mobile operators, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled the status of 5G development as at the end of FY 2023.
 As at the end of FY 2023, the nationwide 5G population coverage rate was 98.1%, exceeding the development target of 97% for the end of FY 2025 set forth in the Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation, two years ahead of schedule.

1. Overview

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) set the following development targets in the Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation, formulated in March 2022 and revised in April 2023:

  • Nationwide 5G population coverage rate: 95% at the end of FY 2023, 97% at the end of FY 2025, and 99% at the end of FY 2030
  • 5G population coverage rate by prefecture: 90% or more for each prefecture at the end of FY 2025 and 99% at the end of FY 2030

 Based on reports from mobile operators (NTT Docomo, Inc., KDDI Corporation/Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company, SoftBank Corp., and Rakuten Mobile, Inc.), the MIC has compiled the 5G development status as of the end of 2023.
 As at the end of FY 2023, the nationwide 5G population coverage rate was 98.1%, achieving the development target set forth in the Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation two years ahead of schedule.
