September 30, 2024 Status of Revenues and Expenses of Private Broadcasters in FY 2023

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has recently summarized the state of the revenues and expenses of private broadcasters for fiscal 2023.

1. Overview

 An overview of the revenues and expenses for FY 2023 is provided below:

○ Terrestrial basic broadcasters

 As for terrestrial basic broadcasters (excluding community broadcasters),their sales decreased (0.2% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (25.9% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.
 Community broadcasters (*) also saw a decline in both sales (-3.0%) and operating income/losses compared to the previous fiscal year.

    For broadcasters that have not yet reached the fiscal year end, the most recent business revenues and expenditures are used to compile the data.

○ Satellite broadcasters

 As for satellite broadcasters (satellite basic broadcasters and satellite general broadcasters), the operating revenue of their satellite broadcasting business decreased (1.6% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (9.7% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.

○ Cable television broadcasters

 For cable television broadcasters*, the operating revenue of their cable television business decreased (1.7% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (7.8% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.

    The data excludes broadcasters that use the IP multicast method among registered general broadcasters (limited to commercial corporations) and perform independent broadcasts with wired telecommunications equipment.
