January 20, 2025 Result of Fourth ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting with Japan
On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Fourth ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting with Japan (ADGMIN+Japan) was held in Thailand. Mr. ADACHI Masashi, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, attended the meeting as the head of Japan’s delegation and proposed the ASEAN-Japan Digital Work Plan 2025 on cooperation and collaboration measures between Japan and ASEAN in the ICT field over the next year, which was endorsed by the ASEAN side.
1. Meeting overview
The ADGMIN+Japan is the only ministerial-level meeting where ICT ministers from Japan and ASEAN Member States meet to decide on initiatives and cooperation in the ICT sector. On Friday, January 17, 2025, the fourth ADGMIN+Japan was held in Thailand, and Mr. ADACHI attended the meeting from Japan side.
2. Summary of meeting results
Minister for Digital Economy and Society of Thailand chaired the ADGMIN+Japan with Mr. ADACHI as the Co-Chair.
At the meeting, Mr. ADACHI proposed the ASEAN-Japan Digital Work Plan 2025 on cooperation and collaboration measures between Japan and ASEAN in the ICT field over the next year, which was endorsed by the participants.
Specifically, Japan explained the initiatives to promote the development of digital infrastructure in the ASEAN region through the proliferation and promotion of Open RAN, and to further expand capacity-building support in the field of cybersecurity, also outlined cooperation with ASEAN on AI policies, including cooperation on AI R&D and AI safety assessments, strengthening interoperability between Japan and ASEAN, and cooperation within multilateral frameworks.
