Technical Requirements for Upgrading the 22 GHz-Band FWA System (hereinafter the "FWA Upgrading Technical Requirements")

- Partial Report from the Information and Communications Council -

Note: The published materials are in Japanese only.

Today, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received the partial report from the Information and Communications Council, chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Special Advisor to NEC Corporation, on the FWA Upgrading Technical Requirements, which form part of the Technical Requirements for Upgrading Commercial Land Mobile Radio Communications Systems (Information and Communications Council Consultation No. 2033 dated May 17, 2013).

1. Overview

With domestic mobile communication traffic increasing at an annual rate of approximately 1.2 times, the full-fledged arrival of the 5G era is expected to significantly increase traffic, including expanded B2B usage and the full-scale implementation of the IoT.
Although it is necessary to secure 5G candidate frequencies in the 26 and 40 GHz bands, the 22 GHz band is regarded as a promising candidate for a transition from existing wireless systems. To achieve a smooth transition, stable high-capacity transmission is required regardless of weather conditions.
The recent heavy rainfall has increased the severity of disasters, making disaster prevention measures more important. The 22 GHz-band FWA system can be installed in areas where optical fiber cannot reach. This has raised expectations for the FWA system, as it can be upgraded to function as resilient infrastructure capable of supporting local communications not only under normal conditions but also during emergencies.
Against this background, the ICT Subcommittee under the Information and Communications Council deliberated on the FWA Upgrading Technical Requirements, and issued the partial report today.

2. Future plans

Based on the partial report, the MIC plans to develop the relevant regulations.
