February 12, 2025 Publication of 5G Infrastructure Development Status (As of the End of FY2023) Based on New Targets

Based on the report from the “Working Group on Promoting Infrastructure Improvements for 5G Proliferation” (chaired by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo), which was compiled in July 2024, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has received reports on the status of 5G infrastructure improvements from mobile phone operators and has published the results of those reports.

Overview

With the expected proliferation of 5G in the future, we need to further enhance the 5G infrastructure to provide mobile phone users with 5G-specific services. Against this background, the “Working Group on Promoting Infrastructure Improvements for 5G Proliferation” (chaired by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo) established under the “Radio Policy Roundtable For Expanding Digital Business” (chaired by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo) compiled a report on new development targets for high-frequency bands such as Sub-6 and mmWave, as well as new technologies like SA (Stand Alone) on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
In addition, the “Action Plan for promoting Wireless Transformation (WX),” which incorporates measures that MIC must address, was formulated on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Based on these, MIC has received reports from mobile operators (NTT Docomo, INC., KDDI Corporation/Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company, SoftBank Corp., and Rakuten Mobile, Inc.) on the 5G infrastructure development status, and have compiled the results, which have been published.
