February 14, 2025 Approval of the Decision by Fund Corporation for the Overseas Development of Japan’s ICT and Postal Services (JICT) on the Target Project for Support
(Support for the Development of the Data Center Business in the United States)
On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications approved the application submitted by the Fund Corporation for the Overseas Development of Japan’s ICT and Postal Services Inc. (headed by OSHIMA Amane, President & CEO) for support for the development of its data center business in the United States. This announcement is being made public now that arrangements have been made among the parties involved.
1. Background
Fund Corporation for the Overseas Development of Japan's ICT and Postal Services Inc. (hereinafter referred to as “JICT”) applied to the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) to approve its decision to support the development of its data center business in the United States (hereinafter referred to as the "Target Project"), pursuant to Article 25, Paragraph 2 of the Act on the Fund Corporation for the Overseas Development of Japan’s ICT and Postal Services Inc. (Act No. 35 of 2015).
In response to the application, MIC examined the support content and the Target Project based on the JICT Support Standards (MIC Notice No. 412, 2015). As a result, on September 5, 2024 (Thursday), the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications concluded that the application met the relevant requirements and approved the decision to support the Target Project as submitted.
2. Target project
JICT plans to invest up to $192 million to participate in a project to construct and operate two data centers in the United States together with Mitsubishi Corporation and Digital Realty Trust Inc.
This project is the first overseas data center business for Mitsubishi Corporation, and requires a large capital investment over a long period of time until the investment is recovered. By supplying risk money, JICT will support Japanese companies with expertise in digital infrastructure to develop their business in the United States, which will lead to further global expansion in the future, thereby contributing to strengthening the international competitiveness of Japanese companies, including their peripheral businesses.
