June 27, 2025 Publication of "Practical Guide for Radio Wave Management of Medical Telemetry Devices"
The Electromagnetic Compatibility Conference Japan (EMCC) (see note) discusses measures to prevent and eliminate interference caused by radio waves to electronic devices. Under the EMCC, the Committee for Promotion of Radio Wave Usage in Medical Institutions (hereinafter referred to as the "Committee") is examining appropriate radio wave usage in medical institutions. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), actively participates in and contributes to these activities.
We are pleased to announce that the EMCC has today published the "Practical Guide for Radio Wave Management of Medical Telemetry Device" based on the results of its study to date.
(Note) A consultative body composed of academic experts, relevant ministries and agencies, and industry organizations that discuss measures to prevent and eliminate interference caused by radio waves to electronic devices and other equipment. The MIC also participates as a constituent member.
1. Overview
In recent years, as radio wave utilization has expanded in medical facilities, issues related to radio wave interference have also emerged. In response, the Committee has been studying the promotion of appropriate radio wave usage in medical institutions under the Conference.
Under these circumstances, it has been found that medical telemeters using radio waves face issues such as poor reception and interference caused by various factors. To raise awareness of these issues, the Committee has prepared documents such as the "Guidance for Safe and Secure Use of Radio Waves in Medical Institutions."
Since then, the Committee has continued to study countermeasures against medical telemetry dead zones in existing facilities, as well as methods for managing specific radio waves to be utilized in medical institutions.
We are pleased to announce that the EMCC has today published the "Practical Guide for Radio Wave Management of Medical Telemetry Device" based on the results of its study to date.
2. Overview of the Practical Guide
Ultimately aiming to prevent problems with medical telemeters at medical institutions, the Practical Guide intends to provide clinical engineers, nurses, medical institution administrators, and clerical staff with information necessary for proper radio wave management. To this end, the Practical Guide also provides specific examples of countermeasures against medical telemetry dead zones in existing facilities, alongside relevant reference materials.
