Estimates for Internet Traffic in Japan
Announcement of aggregate results as of May 2025
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) now publishes the results of the traffic (data volume) survey conducted for Japan’s fixed broadband internet services. In order to understand the actual situation, the survey was carried out in May 2025 with the cooperation of Internet Service providers (Note 1), Internet Exchanges (IXs) (Note 2), and researchers (Note 3).

Main Points
As of May 2025, the total download traffic for subscribers (Note 4) of Japan’s fixed broadband Internet service (Note 5) was estimated at approximately 41.6 Tbps (about 276.7 GB per contract per month (Note 6)), an increase of 15.3% from the volume of the same month of last year.
