March 11, 2026 Report from the Radio Regulatory Council on the Request for Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) to Implement International Broadcasting and Other Services for FY2026 (hereinafter referred to as the "Request")

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) consulted the Radio Regulatory Council, chaired by SASASE Iwao, professor emeritus at Keio University, regarding the Request for NHK, headed by INOUE Tatsuhiko. Today, the MIC received a report from the Council stating that the Request is appropriate.
 In response, the MIC will request NHK to implement international broadcasting on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, provided the necessary budget has been approved by the Diet as of the same date.

  • ◦ The Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications may request that NHK carry out international broadcasting and other services by specifying broadcast areas, broadcast items and other necessary matters, pursuant to Article 65, Paragraph 1 of the Broadcasting Act (No. 132 of 1950).
  • ◦ The MIC consulted the Radio Regulatory Council regarding the request to implement international broadcasting and other services for FY2026, and received a report from the Council stating that the request is appropriate. The MIC will make a request on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, provided the necessary budget has been approved by the Diet as of the same date.
