July 16, 2026 Signing of a Letter of Intent for Collaboration on 6G and AI RAN Related Technologies Forming the Basis of Physical AI Connectivity with NVIDIA Corporation (hereinafter the "LOI")

　On Thursday, July 16, 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), signed the LOI with NVIDIA Corporation regarding the collaboration on 6G and AI RAN related technologies forming the basis of physical AI connectivity.

1. Background

　6G and AI RAN are technologies that have the potential to radically transform conventional network technologies in the field of wireless communications. They are also recognized as core next-generation wireless technologies underpinning Japan’s digital transformation of industry and society by enabling everything to be connected to AI and the cloud via networks.

　As the social implementation of AI, including Physical AI, continues to advance, it is becoming increasingly important for Japan to ensure its international competitiveness in 6G and AI RAN related technologies.

　The MIC is advancing efforts to secure Japan’s technological leadership through research and development of 6G and AI RAN related technologies, while promoting their social implementation and global deployment. In addition, to effectively pursue these efforts, the MIC is strengthening international collaboration with partner countries, companies, and other stakeholders, including by joining the AI-RAN Alliance in February 2026.

2. Overview

　With a view to further advancing initiatives regarding the collaboration on 6G and AI RAN related technologies forming the basis of physical AI connectivity, the MIC and NVIDIA Corporation have decidedto share their understanding of Strategic Objectives and Areas of Intended Collaboration in the 6G and AI RAN fields, with the aim of creating a structured cooperation framework.

　Accordingly, Takuo Imagawa, Vice-Minister for International Affairs, and Mr. Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President for Telecom Business Unit, NVIDIA Corporation signed the LOI regarding this cooperation.

　Under this cooperation, both participants aim to develop next-generation digital infrastructure that is secure, resilient, trusted, open and interoperable and which underpins an AI-driven society.
