May 20, 2023 Publication of Japan-U.S.-Australia-India Open RAN Security Report

Today, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has released the “Open RAN Security Report.” This report results from Japan’s initiative in the Japan-US-Australia-India Quad Critical and Emerging Technology Working Group.

Open RAN is a Radio Access Network (RAN) that enables interoperability with equipment and systems from various suppliers by standardizing and opening up the specifications of base stations.
The Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on 5G Supplier Diversification and Open RAN was signed by the heads of the responsible agencies from the four countries on May 24, 2022. Based on this memorandum, the Japan-US-Australia-India Quad Critical and Emerging Technology Working Group has continued to discuss Open RAN validation, interoperability, information sharing on security, potential sharing of testing environments, and further areas of cooperation.
With growing interest in the security of Open RAN, this report evaluates the advantages, challenges, and potential to overcome those challenges of Open RAN compared to traditional single vendor RAN through objective investigation and analysis, including demonstration testing. This report is published by the Japan-US-Australia-India Quad Critical and Emerging Technology Working Group as an output based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on 5G Supplier Diversification and Open RAN.
