January 18, 2024 Technical Requirements for 9.7-GHz Band Phased-array Weather Radar, etc.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received today a partial response from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by ENDO Nobuhiro, Executive Advisor of NEC Corporation) on technical requirements for 9.7-GHz band phased array weather radar, etc., within technical requirements for weather radar, in response to Inquiry No. 2040 dated September 27, 2017.

1. Background

From the perspective of providing weather information, weather radar is indispensable for ensuring the safety and security of people’s lives. With the recent intensification of disasters, more sophisticated weather radar is required to be introduced.
Based on these needs, the Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee of the Information and Communications Council’s Department on Information and Communications Technology compiled a report in December 2023 on “Technical Requirements for 9.7GHz Band Phased Array Weather Radar, etc.” as a part of technical requirements for weather radar.
The results of the Subcommittee’s study were discussed by the Information and Communications Council’s Department on Information and Communications Technology, and MIC received a partial response today.

2. Contents of the partial report

The partial response, the report, and a summary of the report are shown in Attachments 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

3. Future plans

Based on this partial response, MIC plans to develop related regulations.
