January 25, 2024 Approval of Exemption from Reception Fees due to 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today approved the application filed on January 23, 2024, by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, also known as NHK (headed by President INABA Nobuo), for exemption from reception fees following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

1. Scope of reception contracts subject to exemption

In the event that any of the following conditions are met within the area where relief under the Disaster Relief Act (Act No. 118 of 1947) has been carried out.
(1) Reception contracts concluded on broadcast reception receivers installed in a building that has been damaged to the extent that it is half destroyed, half burned down, or flooded above floor level or above.
(2) Reception contracts for those receiving instructions for evacuation or orders to leave based on the Basic Act on Disaster Management (Act No. 223 of 1961) continuously for one month or more.
*Cases will be treated as (2) if both (1) and (2) apply.

2. Exemption period

(1) January through June 2024 (a four-month extension of the exemption period)
(2) January through June 2024
However, in the case that the residents are still under instructions for evacuation or orders to leave based on the Basic Act on Disaster Management as of July 1, 2024, the period shall last until the month following the month in which the instructions for evacuation or orders to leave are lifted.

3. Expected number of reception fee exemptions

Approximately 6,000 cases

4. Expected amount of reception fee exemptions

Approximately 60 million yen
