April 19, 2024 Result of Solicitation for Opinions on the “(Draft) AI Guidelines for Business” and the Publication of the Guidelines

 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) compiled the "(Draft) AI Guidelines for Business" and solicited opinions from Saturday, January 20, 2024, to Monday, February 19, 2024.
 As a result, 3947 opinions were submitted. Based on the opinions submitted, we have prepared and published the "AI Guidelines for Business (Ver. 1.0)."

1. Background

 The AI Strategy Council, chaired by MATSUO Yutaka, professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, compiled the "Tentative Summary of AI Issues " on Friday, May 26, 2023. In light of the proliferation of generative AI, this summary of issues indicates the need to consider revisions to existing guidelines. In response, MIC and METI have been considering creating unified and easy-to-understand guidelines for a wide range of AI business actors by merging or updating existing ones.
 The two ministries convened the meetings of the Conference toward AI Network Society, chaired by SUDO Osamu, professor at the Faculty of International Information Studies, Chuo University, and the Study Group on AI Guidelines for Business, chaired by WATANABE Toshiya, professor at the Institute for Future Initiatives, the University of Tokyo. Based on the discussions at both meetings, they compiled the "(Draft) AI Guidelines for Business" and solicited opinions.

2. Future plans

 On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the ministries convened the Conference toward AI Network Society and the Study Group on AI Guidelines for Business, based on the results of opinions solicited, to discuss pertinent issues. Subsequently, the draft Ver. 1.0 was compiled at the meetings, and it has been presented today at the AI Strategy Council and published as "AI Guidelines for Business (Ver. 1.0)."
