Outline of the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP)

1 Purpose of establishment and history

United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) 別ウィンドウで開きますwas established in 1970 as a project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan, with the aim of providing practical statistical training to official statisticians in developing countries in the ESCAP region.

In light of the resolution of the 50th ESCAP Commission Session in 1994, SIAP was accorded the legal status of a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)別ウィンドウで開きます in April 1995.


2 Legal basis and details of Japan’s cooperation

Based on the “Agreement between the Government of Japan and the United Nations relating to the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific別ウィンドウで開きます”, the Government of Japan (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) extends cooperation as a host government by providing cash and/or in-kind contributions (provision of offices, equipment, facilities, etc.) within its budget, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
 

3 Location and number of staff

Location: JETRO-IDE Building 4th floor, 2-2 Wakaba 3-chome, Mihama-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba, Japan
Number of United Nations staff: 9 members in total, including the director, the deputy director/cum lecturer and statisticians/lecturers

4 Training courses

There are a wide variety of training courses, including those conducted in Japan, such as the Group Training Course in Improving Capability in Producing Official Statistics Relating to MDGs Indicators (4 months) and the Group Training Course in Production and Statistical Analysis of Monitoring Indicators in Support of Inclusive Development Policies (6 weeks), as well as those conducted by dispatching a lecturer to each country, such as the country training course.

5 Number of participants

As of the end of March 2014, SIAP has been providing training to 14,002 participants from 128 countries and regions mainly in Asia and the Pacific since its establishment in 1970.

6 Outcome of training

SIAP has greatly contributed to improvement of national statistical systems as well as official statisticians mainly in developing countries of the ESCAP region.
