United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) was established in 1970 as a project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan, with the aim of providing practical statistical training to official statisticians in developing countries in the ESCAP region.
In light of the resolution of the 50th ESCAP Commission Session in 1994, SIAP was accorded the legal status of a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in April 1995.
